Machine paitings. Liviu Pasare 2019-
This series, titled L’esprit du technologique (The Spirit of the Technological), is an exploration of how the virtual and digital realms manifest in the physical world, which is inherently subject to gravity and time.
The subjects of the paintings—ubiquitous digital markers and icons—are treated not merely as symbols, but as the new mediums or governors of the digital age. These entities personify the invisible powers that manage the relationship between the physical and virtual realms:
- These icons are created using a precision paint-dropping machine. Vector drawings guide the process as the machine translates digital geometry into a series of individual paint drops.
This technique creates a paradox: a machine’s perfect geometry rendered in the unpredictable language of gravity. By mediating the act of painting through a robotic arm, I remove the artist’s hand from the gesture, surrendering the final outcome to the code and the physical laws of viscosity. The result is a beaded, three-dimensional surface that is both uniform in its overall shape and unique in its texture. Ultimately, the paintings visually represent the fundamental tension between the calculated world of technology and the vibrant, unpredictable nature of our physical existence.

- The Arrow/Cursor is the deity governing Agency, conveying intent, motion, and choice.
- The Hand Icon governs Action and Communication, acting as an extension of physical language.
- The Location Icon governs Presence and Space, defining one’s coordinates and locus.
- The At Sign (@) governs Relation and Connection, serving as the medium for digital address and interaction.
